Foreword to the Exhibition
When I repeatedly carved those indentations in the printmaking studio
of Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, I had no idea that this practice,
which began as technical training, would eventually evolve into a
journey of self-redemption spanning Eurasia.
Along the curatorial route, there is a collection titled Artistic
Musings by the Tiber River – a compilation of art critiques and essays I
wrote during my undergraduate studies, initially published on the
self-media platform Titan’s Tour of Europe. Scattered like fragments of
time, these words and thoughts record a Chinese art student’s
questioning of the Western contemporary art system: In an era where
installation art is capitalized and performance art is trivialized, how
can a Chinese student majoring in printmaking, studying abroad in a
foreign land, maintain spiritual independence?
Silence has been elevated to a unique artistic language in this
exhibition. The "loss for words" I experienced during my master’s
studies was transformed into a profound sense of creative awareness
within the curatorial narrative. In Rome – a city overflowing with
Baroque rhetoric – my printmaking tools began to pursue "subtraction":
the acid-etched grooves on copper plates, the raw texture left by
woodcarving knives – all became honest declarations resisting the
discursive bubbles of contemporary art. A series of works in the
exhibition entitled Silence embodies the most important lesson I learned
in Europe: When words are pale, matter speaks in its own way.
Using carving tools as a medium to inscribe the dimension of time,
what I learned in Rome was more than just Crocean aesthetics or
Renaissance techniques – it was the courage to rediscover myself through
the lens of another culture. After years of studying abroad in Italy, I
finally understood: True curation is never about arranging a space; it
is about orchestrating an unceasing process of self-renewal. The
exhibition also has a subtitle, "Pure Art Public Welfare Sharing," which
points to the core concept of this solo show amid the current context –
"the uncurated curation."
Finally, to all fellow travelers who have joined this silent ritual:
May every viewer and reader encounter the next phase of yourselves in
this exhibition.

Exhibition Works Introduction
Taking the artist’s handmade artist’s books as the core thread, this
exhibition is supplemented by a series of works featuring printmaking
language and commemorative significance, presenting Zhang Qiange’s
self-exploration and conceptual expression in her artistic practice over
recent years.
The main exhibited works include:
1.Handmade Artist’s Book Record of Explosion
2024, Linocut, Image Size: 15×46cm
Detailed Work Introduction
Edition: 3/5
This work is a double-page illustration from the handmade book Record
of Explosion. It recreates the poem Record of Explosion by Chen Nianxi,
a poet who once worked as a miner. Through either rough or sharp
incisions, and layered textures as dark and dense as ink, the work
attempts to recreate that cry from the depths of the earth’s strata—a
raw, tragic vitality like dynamite, bursting forth from the humble under
the heavy weight of fate.
The work seeks to freeze the imminent moment of "explosion": where
destruction and rebirth, darkness and faint light violently intertwine.
It is a tribute to all wills to live that still strive to shine
brightly, even under the crushing weight of life.
Note: More detailed introductions to the exhibited works will be
released simultaneously on the official WeChat account of "STUDIO
EDITION ONE".

(Illuminated
Fun Facts About Illuminated Manuscripts
Illuminated Manuscripts originated in the Middle Ages and the
Renaissance. They refer to books where texts were hand-copied,
accompanied by elaborate decorations and illustrations (known as
"Illumination"). These works are not merely carriers for reading, but
treasures that integrate calligraphy, painting, gilding, and bookbinding
art into a single entity.
The history of European illuminated manuscripts can be described as a
narrative of combining text, images, and exquisite craftsmanship to
express faith, knowledge, power, and beauty. Italy played a pivotal role
in their emergence, revival, and dissemination.
Even after Gutenberg’s invention of movable type printing (c. 1450),
illuminated manuscripts continued to exist for a considerable period.
While printing promoted the large-scale production of books and the
popularization of knowledge, leading to the gradual decline of the
hand-copying industry, the arts of bookbinding and illustration
persisted in printed books in new forms.
The history of Italian illuminated manuscripts resembles a
microcosmic art history evolving from religious devotion to secular
splendor. It not only records the evolution of painting styles—from
Byzantine and Gothic to Renaissance—but also reflects the shift of
social power, from monasteries to royal courts. Eventually, amid the
wave of printing, illuminated manuscripts transformed into an enduring
art form.
These precious legacies are now housed in major libraries and museums
around the world (such as the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana in
Florence and the Vatican Library), continuing to tell the story of an
era when knowledge was "illuminated" through human hands and
craftsmanship.
Today, the spirit of illuminated manuscripts is carried forward by
"artist-made books." Artists treat the book itself as a medium for
artistic expression, engaging in experimentation and creation that
transcends the traditional decorative function of books, allowing them
to bear more profound concepts.
